Description
The process of distillation is one of the oldest processes known to mankind, and strategies and technologies involved in the distillation process are constantly being developed and refined. Distillation is used as a method of separating a mixture of liquids as well as for separating mixtures of gases. It is a vitally important separation method and is used extensively throughout the petroleum and chemical industries. In the oil industry, for example, it is used almost exclusively as the method for separation. All individuals involved in distillation in particular, or the oil and gas industry in general would benefit from this course.

Objective
This two day course will provide the background on the principles of the process of distillation and link these to the operation of distillation technologies in practice. Participants will gain an understanding of what takes place in a distillation column and relate this to how it is controlled and operated. This will enable operating personnel and Engineers to appreciate why the various changes made in operating distillation columns result in the products that are obtained. The course also aims to learn the basic fundamentals of distillation equipment designing and operation control.

Target Audience
Engineers in the refining, petrochemical, chemical, and Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) industry involved in the design, selection, or operation of distillation and/or absorption towers. This course will be most beneficial to persons who have experience working with mass transfer equipment.

After Attending This Course You Will Be Able To:
  • Understand the principles and objectives of distillation process
  • Improve the knowledge of Engineering principles of unit operation in distillation equipment.
  • Gain understanding and proper application in process design of distillation column and practical know-how to design tray tower and/or packed tower distillation column
  • Understand and troubleshoot the main operational problems of distillation columns
  • Learn how to optimize distillation processes using the most efficient regulatory and advanced control schemes

Fares Almomani

Fares Almomani has a Ph.D in chemical engineering from Barcelona University, and is a registered professional engineer in the province of Ontario (OPE). He has over 10 years of industrial experience in separation processes while working in Canada, Germany, and Jordan. He has more than 7 years of practical engineering experience with petroleum and petrochemical industries (3 years process engineer at Jordan petroleum refinery, certified master trainer in enhance team performance, USA Tracom Company and DOW chemicals). He has worked in different capacities including shift engineer at Jordan Petroleum Refinery, associate professor at Jordanian university for 12 years, industrial consultant and project planning.

He is currently working as instructor and researcher at Carleton University in the areas of industrial and municipal wastewater treatment process development, modeling, and optimization. He has published more than 50 reviewed journal articles, conference papers, conference presentations, and engineering reports.

Dr. Almomani has carried out more than 15 projects funded by industry, research organizations, and government departments. He has taught undergraduate courses in chemical engineering, separation processes, chemical engineering for non-engineers, biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, environmental protection, environmental engineering fundamentals, probability and statistics for engineers, and chemical and physical treatment processes. Graduate level courses include advanced mass transfer, advanced chemical reaction, biological waste-treatment processes, physical-chemical water and wastewater treatment, and environmental engineering measurements.
